Question: Has your knowledge from this class changed the way you listen to music now or at all?

     This class has definitely shown me so much in regards to where art all started from. I love Broadway shows and musicals and movies, but never really gave them a second thought. Now for being in this class and being in a media degree, I have learned so much of where we all started and how we ended up to where we are today. My degree also let me learn more of what goes into making a production and how everything is but together. In regards to music, I don't think my taste in music has changed. I listen to pretty much every genre of music, I just listen to what stands out and sounds good to me. I have different songs for different moods and different activities I'll do. I will say though that I do pay more attention to the music that is in the background of movies though. I also now find myself thinking sometimes of how that sound could be or could've been made. Was it just from a computer or piece of technology? Or was it something crazy by just banging a drum or a dripping faucet. I really enjoyed this class and although it didn't change my music choices, I definitely learned a lot from it.

     I was really interested in today's class topic of music. I never really thought too much into music besides deciding what to listen to in the car or when I workout. This really opened my eyes and ears to what music can be used for and how it can be made.
     I have so many songs that I love and so many genres that I listen to but one of the songs I seem to listen to a lot would be Broken & Beautiful by Kelly Clarkson. I really liked listening to the lyrics and also watching the music video with her dancing with her daughter. I've listened to Kelly Clarkson since I was little in 2002 when she was on American Idol. She music genre is pop and she is from Texas.

     For this assignment we had to watch 3 clips from Broadway shows. The first clip I watched was from Hair. I had never heard of this Broadway show before, so it was interesting to watch. I really liked how each of their bodies flew smoothly together when in the circle dancing and singing. It was very captivating. The second clip that I watched was one from Charlie and the Chocolate Factory. I have watched the movie to this show and I was impressed and surprised to how closely the Broadway show resembled the movie. I liked this movie as a kid and really enjoyed the upbeat performance from the Broadway show. The last clip I watched was from Guys and Dolls. I watched the trailer clip and the clip of the song “Sit down you’re rocking the boat”. I really liked watching these clips because it reminded me of when my high school did this musical. It was interesting to compare to how it was produced at my school to how it is produced on Broadway. I really enjoyed watching all of these clips as I really enjoy watching musicals on Broadway. I have seen a few and hope to continue watching musicals on Broadway. I think it is incredible how much Broadway has grown throughout history.

Daily Post: Robots

It was really eye opening to watch the videos on robots in today's class. I never knew that Uber was involved with the trucking business or that automatic machines were able to move shipments around an Amazon warehouse. It was crazy to think that a job like a pharmacist could be completely controlled by robots and other machines. My sister is in her fifth out of seventh year of pharmacy college. It is mind-blowing to think that all that she is learning can just be a program to a computer one day. I never thought about how negative technology could impact our jobs and even human interaction. I even see robots doing custodial work in grocery stores now instead of human beings. It's even scarier to see the videos of the realistic looking robots that interact like humans with real human beings. If this is where we are at today and where we have been, I can’t even imagine where we will be in just another few years. The microchip that was planted underneath their skin could become dangerous in some ways. It would be very expensive to get this done and would be limited at first. Also, there could be a risk of infections with this implants. People can also be sacrificing privacy to be able to have this. Technology can be a blessing to things like new medicines and helping factors, however it can also be a curse by taking away more and more jobs and privacy everyday.

Is the World We Live in a Simulation?

     We watched this video in class talking about how the world could possibly just be a simulation that we just live in and works on our decisions. I do not believe that we are in a simulation, although it is very convincing. I think our choices aren't computerized. I am always someone who second guesses her work and choices and is always thinking in her head. These decisions could have gone one way or the other that lead to different choices. Some may say these decisions and paths are a simulation but I do not believe so.

     Today's class we looked at a lot of examples of television and how it evolved over time. It was interesting looking into the first television shows that were created for people to enjoy at home. My dad really likes watching old films. I also noticed a particular clip from I Love Lucy that we watched I have seen in other shows and movies as well. I love how some of today's shows and movies use inspiration from previous films in history. Also, we looked at Arduino. It was really cool to watch how they used that small circuit board to be able to turn off the lights while also just hitting the play button to watch a movie. Or even use water or a drawing to play a video game.

     My favorite part about today's lecture was continuing on learning about photography and the start of film. I really liked watching the video about the photo gun Marey used to capture 12 frames a second of a person running or birds flying. I also enjoyed seeing examples of videos for our video projects. My favorite fact was that Muybridge was able to expose the myth of if a horse 'flies' and has all legs in the air. Although, painters thought it was when the legs were outright, he proved that it happened when the legs were underneath the horse.

     What I found most interesting about Daguerre was that he was able to capture the first people in a photograph. I have loved photography for as long as I can remember. Although I knew this fact already, it still amazes me every time to hear that he exposed the film for hours to get a photograph. When today, we can take a photograph in milliseconds and even develop the film so much faster. What I did not know was that he used a mirror to get more light onto his subjects and I had a strong connection to this because I use a mirror in my own photography as well. I love to be creative and use things I find a home for reflections because I have a limited budget being a student. Another fact that I knew but still find interesting is that people never really smiled in older photographs because the exposure time was so long that it was very difficult to hold a smile and stand still for hours on end. It will always amaze me where photography started to where we are now and what we can do with photographs.

     This daily post is a little late, but it has been a bit hard adjusting to online classes because of the coronavirus outbreak. This class was one of my first classes online and was a very interesting experience. We mainly talked about our other projects, the two videos, and the flipbook assignment. However, we also briefly continued on photography which some things I knew already as well, like last class.

     Today I had a lot of fun in class. We learned about photography and film. Specifically, we learned about the camera obscura and how it works. I have previously learned about the camera obscura from other classes I have taken but I still love to learn about anything photography. What I didn't know before today was the superstition of salt that originated from the last supper picture. I have studied this painting many times, normally when discussing its linear perspective. However, I never had noticed the 'knife of betrayal' or even the bowl of salt that was knocked over, which started the superstition of bad luck for spilling salt. I have always known of this superstition but it was really cool and interesting to see where it originated from.

     If I were to turn the opera Madame Butterfly into a video game, I wouldn't want to make it too different from the original. I would create the game to have various amounts of paths to choose from and go down. For example, when the child is born, there can be a choice for if the child is a boy or a girl. I would also like to make the characters more interactive friendly, where the players can design what they want the characters to look like, and perhaps be able to put in their own name as the character. Partway through the story, there can be a time where Pinkerton can choose to check up on Butterfly or continue on his way. If choosing to check up on her, he can find out about the child sooner and maybe make the decision to return back to her earlier. There can also be a choice whether or not Butterfly wants to give up her child, or maybe run away with her child. This can also change the plot of the story where, if she decides to run away, she can start a new life with her child and perhaps find someone else to love.

In class, we watched an opera called Madame Butterfly and shortly after, watched an animation based on the opera. Compared to the performance, the animation was more graphic and intimate. I noticed in the opera the child was a boy but in the animation, the child was a girl. However, in the animation, she was still connected to the child until Pinkerton ripped out the umbilical cord. To depict her committing suicide, the animation shows her taking apart her body like bolts and ripping apart her skin. The beginning of the scene shows Butterfly and Pinkerton having an affair where she ends up pregnant. This shocked me at first when I saw it because it focused more on the sex between the two individuals while in the opera it never shows anything about an affair or a child until later on. However, I do believe it was a beautiful animation showing Madame Butterfly in this different, shocking way.

     In today's class, we branched off of opera and looked into musicals and Broadway. We talked a little bit about Jazz music and also looked at cabaret performances. When learning about Vaudeville, I knew a little about Black Face already, and it was interesting to learn more about it. I really liked the opera, Madame Butterfly we watched that I will talk about in another post. I love musicals and always have. It was amazing to see that the top five musicals were: the Phantom of the Opera, the Lion King, Wicked, Beauty and the Beast, and Mamma Mia. It was really cool to learn that the Phantom of the Opera is the most successful musical and is the longest shown musical for over 9,000 times. Lastly, we talked about the period DaDa. I had never heard of it before but it was extremely interesting to learn that this was the time that changed everything in art from the sounds of music to the type of art, especially performance art.

     Today in class we watched a video of Howard Goodall discuss the history of Opera. What stood out to me was when he talked about the comparison of musicals to operas. It was interesting to learn that operas tell a story, that doesn't have to be tragic, all in song. In opera, there is only the projected voice of the singer. There are no microphones, or dialogue during the performance. He showed an example of a situation where the dialogue was sung in an opera and explained how the stylistic unity of it makes it more plausible and less melodramatic. I also did not know the different periods of opera. There is Baroque (1600-1750), Classical (1750-1825), and Romantic (1825-1910). I am most familiar with the Classical period, however, it was interesting to hear about each period and see how each period had a slightly different sound filled with composers that created their own style. Over the years, through the periods, composers wanted to perfect their craft which developed over time, which created each period. It was really interesting to see how opera has changed throughout history and how it has developed into today as well.

     Today in class we learned about Opera. I never knew much about Opera. I have never gone to see one nor do I have an interest in listening to it. I always thought it was very dramatic and tragic performances with loud singing. However, I thought it was really interesting learning how only little boys used to be in choirs because of their higher voices. Also what shocked me was how opera can be comedic and it can be sung in any language, not just Italian. It was amazing to see a video of an Opera but sung in English. I have never seen that before.

     Today's class was really interesting. We learned about cathedrals and Gaudi's architecture. There were some cathedrals we looked at in Spain and it reminded me of my trip I took to Spain a few years ago. I visited different cathedrals than the ones that were shown but the structures were still very unique and beautiful to see. We also looked at the Camino de Santiago which is a famous walk through Northern Spain. I knew about this walk because I learned about it in high school and also watched a movie on it as well. However, it was still really interesting to learn more about it again and bring back those memories I had when traveling to Spain.

     Today's class opened my eyes to where the arts originated from. I knew of the Greece Amphitheater but I had no idea about the precision behind it. The arts way back when was mostly connected to religion which I knew a little about but was interesting to see the first video of Native Americans. The arts were originally just apart of their culture as a way of appreciating their higher power and show their faith and loyalty to them.

     Raul Cuero was born in Colombia from a family of 7. He grew up with hardly anything. However, through all his struggles he was able to become a pronounced microbiologist. Some of the things he mentioned throughout the film were considered controversial. For example, he talks about creativity and relating it with technology. He mentions that technology is the cause of the lack of creativity around the world. However, I can disagree with this. For me, I believe that it really depends on the person if technology hinders there creativity. I believe that today we are in the “in-between stage” of technology. Some people are used to creativity on paper with a pencil, however, there are children today who have grown up with technology. Some may be used to using technology as their creative outlook, some may not. Personally, I do spend too much time on technology for school which leaves me with no time to be able to relax and create. I do miss those times and try to grab those moments at any time I can. I will definitely try harder this semester to sit back and relax more to think more creatively than I have been.
     Another thing he mentions is about education today. He believes there is a lack of parental involvement that hinders a child’s education. I have always had both my parents in my life. However, my dad was and still is working a lot and I would not seem him a lot. Even though my dad was more absent than my mother, I do not think I had any shortage of an education because of it. Any moment I spent with my parents was a learning experience, even to this day.

About Me

     My name is Morgan and I am a Junior at the University of Tampa. I am originally from Long Island, New York. My major is Advertising and Public Relations with a double minor in Business Administration and Photography.

     I have had a passion for photography ever since I started taking photographs in middle school. Once I was gifted with my first professional camera, I couldn't stop. I hope to be a professional photographer and potentially have my own studio one day. My favorite type of photography is family, portrait and wedding photography.

     The picture I chose to add to this blog is a picture of me eating some ice cream. Ice cream is my all-time weakness. When I was little, I would always get ice cream after dinner with my family. When I wouldn't finish it, my grandpa would always eat the rest, even my sister's as well. These memories I have with my grandpa are very special to me. Family to me is everything. I am very grateful to have such a close relationship with my immediate family, and no matter what I know they will be my rock throughout my life.

     I am really looking forward to this class to learn more about the shocking aspect of this class. I don't know exactly what to expect, but some things that were already mentioned I have learned before. However, I think that there is always something new to learn and I can't wait.
